The year has been phenomenal for RIMOWA with collaborations from Anti Social Social Club and Supreme. RIMOWA had already revealed that the collaboration with OFF-WHITE was imminent in September of 2017. RIMOWA co-chief executive Alexandre Arnault teased the OFF-WHITE collaboration on Instagram, showcasing a pair of black topas stealth multi-wheel suitcases with “PERSONAL” in a 85L model and “BELONGINGS” in a 45L model.
However these are not the suitcases that will be going into production. Instead the suitcases that this collaboration will bring is a transparent polycarbonate suitcase set. In a conversation with, The Business Of Fashion, Virgil Abloh explained the suitcase he created for RIMOWA is transparent in order to let consumers participate in the design process, much as he has with some of his recent collaborations for Nike.
He then when on to say “It’s like 3.0 of personalization. It’s not just putting your initials on a product but allowing another layer to come in play,” he explained. “There’s an emotional component to owning the suitcase and you become a performance art piece just by using the thing. It’s like putting your items on display and rethinking the premise of a product.”
The OFF-WHITE x RIMOWA collaboration will drop at the OFF-WHITE menswear show in Paris on June 20.
